The B-52D was primarily a long-range bomber, exclusively designed for bombing missions without reconnaissance capabilities. The introduction of the Big Belly modifications enhanced its capacity to carry substantial payloads of conventional bombs, facilitating carpet bombing operations over Vietnam. Additionally, the Rivet Rambler modification incorporated the Phase V ECM systems, surpassing the capabilities of most subsequent B-52 models. Due to these advancements and its impressive range, the B-52D model saw more extensive deployment in Vietnam than any other variant. Aircraft assigned to Vietnam sported a camouflage colour scheme with black undersides to evade searchlights.
