This detailed HO Scale Atlas Master Silver EMD GP38 is based on the 2,000-horsepower road switchers introduced in 1966. The line of locomotives was powered by the 16-cylinder 645-series prime mover and was non-turbocharged. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, many railroads began to replace the existing oil-bath filters on their "early" GP38s with easier-to-maintain paper air filter (which became a standard feature on later GP38 production). Locomotives that received the new air filters could be identified by a modification to the dynamic brake blister, where the portion closest to the cab was "chopped" to make room for the new equipment. Two common styles of filter box (square and angled) are being produced and the model features these details as-appropriate for each road name. The GP38 was a versatile locomotive that could be found across the US hauling drag freights and working all kinds of locals and heavy switching - jobs many still perform. A key spotting feature on the GP38 is its two rear fans. The EMD GP38 comes equipped with an eight-pin DCC socket for easy decoder installation when you're ready. Other EMD GP38 features include a five-pole skewed-armature motor with dual flywheels, directional LED lighting, AccuMate(R) magnetic knuckle couplers, accurate decoration, road name-appropriate body phase details and plenty of applied details
