The development of the Schutzenpanzerwagen Sd.Kfz. 251 was completed in October 1937 and the subsequent series production ran from 1938 to 1945.

With over 10,000 units produced, the Sonderkraftfahrzeug 251 variant D was by far the most manufactured for the German Wehrmacht. The 251/22 version was armed with one of the most commonly used anti tank guns, the 7.5 cm PaK 40 L/46.

Fewer than 300 units of the 251/22 version were produced from December 1944 onward.

The Yugoslav army used captured vehicles well into the 1950s.
