The always innovative Team Lotus entered the 1970 F1 season with the Lotus type 72, and successive improvements resulted with the Model C. Jochen Rindt ‘s driving demonstrated the exemplary fast speeds of the Lotus 72C. The profile of the body was made to resemble the shape of a wedge, thereby improving its aerodynamics with less drag but also obtaining enough downforce to maintain control. This was the first F1 racing car that attempted to integrate both reduced drag and improved downforce in the car body itself. The Lotus 72 went on the incorporate numerous other improvements and remained a contender even up to the 1975 races, marking a phenomenally long career for the famed race car.
