Designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the Kübelwagen (German: “bassine car”) was to equip the German army with a light all-terrain car, the equivalent of the American Willys Jeep but with only 2 wheel drive. Its name comes from its general appearance in the shape of a large basin, with an open and very simple body. The metal walls of the car were very thin and the doors were rustic. Its production was very simple and inexpensive. This small light car (725 kg), agile and reliable was intended to transport 4 soldiers including officers. Over 55,000 copies were produced throughout the war The front doors can be in the open or closed position.
