The F-14 "Tomcat" fighter is the continuation of the "Cat" series of fighter jets in the history of the military. The F4F "Wildcat" and F6F "Hellcat" that ruled the sky many years ago are the predecessors of the F-14 "Tomcat". Back in the late 1960s, the U.S. Navy began the TFX program with a focus on developing fighter jets for fleet air defence. Grumman began to develop the F-14, because the company's fighter must be named after the "cat". The military chief of the program was the Navy's General Tom Connery, who was known as "Tom's Cat" until the F-14 was officially named the "Tomcat."
