The D.520 entered service with the French Air Force shortly after the start of World War II. It was considered the best fighter in France at the time. The prototype first flew in 1938. After the German occupation of France in November 1942, 246 D.520s were captured .520, but only 182 were in flight able condition. The Germans incorporated some of the planes into the logistics force for training. Part of it was sold to servant nations for use in warfare. Some of the remainder was destroyed in the campaign for the liberation of France, while others were recaptured by Free French fighters and resistance groups.
