The Israeli Ministry of Defence held a mass production ceremony for the new main battle tank Merkava MK4 on June 24, 2002. The 65-ton Merkava 4 entered mass production in 2001 and will be delivered to the IDF for active service in 2004. The Ministry of Defence will produce the heavy vehicle at an annual production rate of 50 to 70 years, with an initial estimate of a total of 400 units. The Merkava 4 has undergone extensive improvements and performance enhancements, introducing new protective armour, main guns and electronic systems. The size of the Merkava MK4 is slightly larger than the MK3 BAZ tank that entered the Israeli Defence Forces in 1990. The difference is that the MK3 can be exported by the Tel Aviv-based SIBAT company. The MK4 will not be used for vehicle exports, but some vehicles Systems and parts can be exported. The MK4 can carry 8 armed infantrymen or a small command organization in addition to its fixed crew (commander, loader, gunner, driver), and it can even carry 3 seriously wounded on stretchers. This tank has the ability to strike moving targets while on the move and has demonstrated a very high hit capability against helicopters in the confrontation with helicopters carrying conventional anti-tank ammunition.
