In the race to conquer the South Pole, three names shone with their own light: Ernest Shackleton, Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen.

The Endurance was launched on December 17, 1912 under the name "Polaris". Originally rigged as a frigate, she was converted into a three masted brigantine and in 1914 took part in the famous "Imperial Transantarctic Expedition" to cross the Antarctic under the command of Sir Ernest Shackleton.

After the shipwreck of August 19, 1915, they were trapped in the ice of the Weddell Sea. For 522 days they endured winds of up to 300 km/h and temperatures of 40 degrees below zero.

Shackleton, together with a few men aboard the boat "James Caird", made one of the most memorable and heroic voyages in the history of navigation. Together with his entire crew, they achieved the most important feat of all...survival.
