From the end of the 8th century, the Vikings, who came from Scandinavia, regularly appeared in Britain and on the European mainland with their longships for raids on a regular basis. These 20 metre long battleships had a bow at the front and a bow at the back, so that they could enter or leave in both directions. Thanks to a shallow draught of just under 1.50 metres, the Vikings were also able to sail or row on rivers and thus raid areas deep in the inland. The Vikings used these fast and manoeuvrable ships, also known as dragons, to penetrate the Vikings penetrated as far as Iceland, Greenland and even North America
