The 490B project "Belka" was proposed as a design scheme of the 490 project main battle tank. In 1984, the Soviet Union had decided to use the 152mm smoothbore gun on the future main battle tank to replace the main battle tank that had been used at that time. 125mm smoothbore gun.
The design of the 490B project is very different from that of the original 490A. The 490B has a very steeply angled upper armour, only rolled steel armour instead of composite armour, and a four-track design.
The 490B adopts a two-person crew design, with the crew compartment located at the rear of the hull, the main gun and ammunition in a separate compartment in front of the crew compartment, and the two engines and fuel tanks in the front of the hull.
The rear-mounted crew compartment design greatly improves the survivability of the crew, so that the vehicle does not need to use special armour or composite armour, and the structure and equipment in front of the tank can fully prevent shelling armour-piercing projectiles from penetrating the car body and entering the crew compartment.
The tank's four sets of tracks can ensure that even if the front track hits a mine or gets an opportunity, it can still maintain its mobility.
The car never went through the scale model stage to make a full-scale model, which was terminated in the late 1980s with the emergence of the new Object 299 Universal Combat Platform concept.
