The Mi-4 was designed to deal with the H-19 Chickasaw helicopters that the United States put into service during the Korean War. The Mi-4 looks similar to the H-19 "Chickasaw", but it is larger and therefore able to carry heavier supplies. The first model entered service in 1952 to replace the Mi-1. In 1952, it was shown to the outside world for the first time at the "Tushino" Soviet aviation festival.
