The USS Atlanta (CL-51) was a light cruiser that served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Commissioned in December 1941, the Atlanta was part of the highly specialized Atlanta-class cruisers, which were designed to counter enemy aircraft with their heavy anti-aircraft armament.
Measuring approximately 541 feet in length and with a displacement of around 6,000 tons, the USS Atlanta boasted a main battery of 16 5-inch guns and an array of anti-aircraft weaponry, including dual-purpose 5-inch guns and numerous smaller caliber guns.
This extensive anti-aircraft armament made her a valuable asset in protecting carrier task forces and other surface ships against enemy air attacks.
During the war, the USS Atlanta participated in various significant engagements in the Pacific theatre.
She played a vital role in the Battle of Midway in June 1942, providing anti-aircraft defence and bombardment support.
The ship also saw action in the Guadalcanal campaign, where she was involved in several naval battles, including the Battle of Savo Island.
Tragically, the USS Atlanta met her fate on November 13, 1942, during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal.
In a fierce night engagement against a superior Japanese force, the ship was hit by numerous enemy shells and torpedoes, leading to her sinking with the loss of many crew members.
Only 144 out of the approximately 700 crew members aboard survived the battle.
The USS Atlanta's service demonstrated the importance of anti-aircraft capabilities in naval warfare during World War II.
Despite her tragic end, the ship and her crew played a significant role in defending American forces and contributed to the overall Allied victory in the Pacific theatre.
