The Zaporozhian Cossacks inhabited part of central Ukraine and by the middle of the 16th century they had effectively built a state which was to endure for around two centuries. For much of that time they were nominally at least subjects of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and for much of the rest they were subject to the Russian Tsar, but in reality they always harboured an independent spirit and were at best difficult to control, which is how they liked it. The martial Cossack spirit meant they were raiders and pirates, but on occasion fought alongside the armies of one power or another, and thus at various times found themselves facing Poles, Russians, Tartars and Ottomans. They participated in the Great Northern War (on the Swedish side)
